AI speeds up research, but it does not release the researcher from verification and responsibility. These ground rules protect your work and your academic reputation.
Language models can invent references that look real. One study found that a large share of the references generated by ChatGPT were fabricated or contained errors (Walters & Wilder, 2023). Open every source before you cite it.
Most journals require authors to disclose the use of AI tools and do not accept them as authors (COPE, 2023; Nature, 2023). Check the journal’s policy before you submit.
Research shows that these tools misclassify writing by non-native English speakers as machine-generated (Liang et al., 2023). Never base a decision on them alone.
Avoid uploading interview data, unpublished manuscripts or personal information to cloud tools. For sensitive recordings, use a tool that runs on your own device, such as Whisper.
Tools that disguise machine-generated text to evade detection amount to academic misconduct, which is why none are included in this guide.
Use tools for searching, summarizing and editing, but the argument, analysis and conclusions must be your own, and you remain accountable for them.
